Canada imposes sanctions on 30 Russian officials over the killing of a lawyer

Canada imposed sanctions on 30 officials of Russia on Friday said they were involved in the killing of anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magentsky in prison in 2009 during serving a sentence for tax fraud

The Canadian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the measures include the freezing of assets and prevent officials from visiting Canada imposed under a new law granting the government the right to target those who see them guilty of human rights violations

The list included Alexander Bastrikin, Russia's top investigator and close aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The United States was blacklisted last January in connection with the lawyer's death

Moscow said last month it would respond if Canada took action against Russian citizens under the new law
